"story": "The Annapurna Sanctuary takes most trekkers a week to reach on foot. By helicopter from Pokhara it takes about twenty minutes.\n\nYou fly at first light up the Modi Khola gorge, past the villages of Ghandruk and Chhomrong and between Hiunchuli and the fishtail summit of Machapuchare, into the high basin below Annapurna I. You land at Annapurna Base Camp, at 4,130 metres, and spend a short time on the ground with the mountains on every side.\n\nThe helicopter is private, and the whole morning takes about an hour and a half, so you are back by the lake for a late breakfast. It suits travellers who are already in Pokhara, those who would like to see the Sanctuary without the walk, and anyone ending an Annapurna trek who wants one more view.\n\nIf cloud stops the flight, we fly the next clear morning. It can be added to any journey that passes through Pokhara, or booked on its own."

"story": "The Modi Khola gorge leads into the Annapurna Sanctuary, a high basin ringed by Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machapuchare.\n\nThis is a good first trek at altitude for fit walkers. The highest night is at 4,130 metres, and the challenge is less the thin air than the stone staircases: thousands of steps up and down between villages, especially around Chhomrong. The walk begins with a drive from Pokhara, so there is no mountain flight to wait for.\n\nYou start in the terraced Gurung villages of Ghandruk and Chhomrong, then follow the gorge through bamboo and rhododendron forest and out above the trees into the Sanctuary. The first night, in Ghandruk, is in a mountain lodge with en-suite rooms. From Chhomrong onwards every lodge on the route is simple, with shared bathrooms in most places, and we book the best private rooms early.\n\nMost itineraries go straight to Base Camp from Deurali. We stop a night at Machapuchare Base Camp first, which keeps the ascent gentle and gives you a second sunrise inside the Sanctuary. Your guide checks your oxygen and pulse each morning and evening from Deurali up. The walk out ends at the hot springs at Jhinu, and you finish with nights in Pokhara and Kathmandu."

"story": "The Annapurna Circuit follows the Marsyangdi valley north, crosses the Thorong La at 5,416 metres and drops to Muktinath, a temple sacred to Hindus and Buddhists alike.\n\nIt is a demanding journey for strong walkers, ideally with a previous multi-day trek behind them. The pass day is long and cold, and the nights before it are spent above 4,000 metres. In return you see a whole cross-section of Nepal, from green terraces and pine forest to the high, dry country north of the main Himalaya.\n\nRoads now reach much of the old route, so we drive the lower valley and walk where the trail is still the best way through: the high route via Ghyaru and Ngawal, the Manang valley and the pass. Every lodge between Dharapani and Muktinath is a simple teahouse, often with shared bathrooms, and we book the best private rooms early in the season.\n\nAltitude is managed carefully. You spend two nights at Manang, take short days to Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi, and your guide checks everyone's oxygen and pulse each morning and evening. After the pass you finish with a night in Jomsom, a flight down the Kali Gandaki gorge to Pokhara, and a full rest day by the lake."

"story": "This is the shortest of our treks: three nights in the best mountain lodges of the Annapurna foothills, with Machapuchare and Annapurna South above you, in six days from Kathmandu.\n\nYou fly to Pokhara and walk a gentle loop through the Gurung villages of Dhampus, Landruk and Ghandruk. The trails are stone staircases between terraced fields and through rhododendron forest, and the walking days are three to four hours, so the afternoons are free in the villages. Each night is in a lodge with en-suite rooms and good food, and you finish with a night by the lake in Pokhara.\n\nIt suits travellers with a week in Nepal, families with children from eight, and anyone who wants their first Himalayan walk without altitude: the highest night is below 2,000 metres. It is also an easy way to add a few days of walking to a tour.\n\nIf you have two more days, our Poon Hill and Ghandruk Trek adds sunrise from Poon Hill and the forest to Ghorepani."

"story": "This is our Everest Base Camp Trek with one change: after sunrise on Kala Patthar, a private helicopter flies you back to Kathmandu, instead of three days walking down the valley.\n\nYou walk every step of the way up, along the Dudh Koshi and the Khumbu Glacier, with two full acclimatisation days at Namche and Dingboche. Low in the valley you sleep in the region's best lodges; higher up, where every lodge is simple, we book the best rooms early. On the ninth day you reach Gorak Shep and walk on to Everest Base Camp.\n\nThe next morning you climb Kala Patthar in the dark for the view of Everest at first light, and the helicopter collects you close by. By late morning you are back at your hotel in Kathmandu, with a spare day held for weather.\n\nIt suits trekkers who want the full ascent but have less time, and those who would rather not walk the long descent on tired knees. The helicopter is private, so it waits for your group and nobody else's."

"story": "This is the walk most people mean when they say Everest. We keep the classic line up the Dudh Koshi and the Khumbu Glacier, and change what happens around it.\n\nThe route climbs from the river valleys below Namche, through the Sherpa villages and the monastery at Tengboche, into the high, bare country above the treeline. The last days run along the Khumbu Glacier to Base Camp, and at dawn the next day you climb Kala Patthar for the best view of Everest on the trek. It suits fit walkers who have done multi-day hikes before and have fifteen days.\n\nLow in the valley you sleep in the region's best lodges, with heated rooms and en-suite bathrooms. Higher up, from Dingboche to Gorak Shep, every lodge is simple, whoever you travel with. There we book the best rooms early and send a guide ahead to have them ready.\n\nYou spend two full days acclimatising, at Namche and at Dingboche, and no night is far above the one before. Your guide checks your oxygen levels every morning and evening, so the last climb to Base Camp and Kala Patthar is one you can enjoy. If you would rather not walk back down, a helicopter can be arranged from Pheriche at extra cost, weather permitting."

"story": "We walk the lower Khumbu slowly and stay in its most comfortable lodges every night: stone and timber, heated beds, mountains filling the window.\n\nThis is the Everest region for travellers who want the mountains, the monasteries and the Sherpa villages without the hardships of high altitude. The journey never sleeps above 3,900 metres, and the walking days are short enough to leave long afternoons for tea and the view. It suits fit walkers of most ages, and anyone who has a week and a half to give to the Khumbu.\n\nTwo nights at Namche and two at Khumjung give your body time. From Deboche you walk up to Tengboche for the morning puja, with Ama Dablam framed in the monastery gate. On the way you share a meal in a Sherpa kitchen, visit the school Edmund Hillary founded, and see Everest from the terrace above Namche.\n\nIf you want to stand closer to Everest, add a private helicopter. It flies on the clearest morning, takes you up the valley to the foot of the mountain and has you back for lunch. Your journey begins and ends at a heritage hotel in Kathmandu, with time in Boudhanath and Patan."

"story": "Three passes above 5,300 metres join the Khumbu's three great valleys into one circuit: Renjo La, Cho La and Kongma La. Along the way you see Gokyo, Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar.\n\nThe route begins on the quiet trail west to Thame, crosses into the Gokyo valley, traverses the Ngozumpa Glacier, and comes over the Cho La into the Everest valley. After Base Camp and Kala Patthar you cross the highest pass, the Kongma La, into the Imja valley and walk back down to Namche. Three weeks, with ten nights above 4,000 metres.\n\nThis is the most demanding journey we offer. We ask for previous trekking at altitude, time each pass to follow nights above 4,300 metres, and send two guides with every pair of guests on the passes. Pass days are long, often eight hours or more, over rock and scree, sometimes on snow and ice.\n\nBelow Namche and at Deboche you stay in the Khumbu's best lodges. For most of the circuit the lodges are simple teahouses, and we book their best rooms early. The ascent is planned with acclimatisation days at Namche and Lungden before the first pass, and each pass follows at least one night above 4,300 metres."

"story": "The Gokyo valley runs parallel to the Base Camp trail and sees a fraction of its traffic. It holds a chain of turquoise lakes along the Ngozumpa, the longest glacier in Nepal.\n\nThe route leaves the main trail above Namche, climbs to the ridge at Mong La and follows the Dudh Koshi north past summer pastures and small settlements to the lakes. It is a high trek, but a gentler one than Base Camp, with shorter walking days and fewer people. It suits fit walkers who want Everest with more quiet and more space.\n\nFrom Gokyo Ri you see four of the world's six highest mountains in one view: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu. We build in two nights at Machhermo and two at Gokyo, so the climb comes on a morning when you feel strong.\n\nBelow Namche you stay in the Khumbu's best lodges. Above it, the lodges are simple stone teahouses, and we book their best rooms early. You end with a warm lodge in Namche, a farewell dinner in Lukla and a last night in Kathmandu in case the mountain flights are delayed."

In Pokhara you watch sunrise over the Annapurnas from Sarangkot and spend a day on the lake.\n\nThis journey suits families, couples and anyone who wants to see the best of Nepal without walking for days at altitude. It also works well before or after a trek. The hotels and lodges are comfortable throughout, and the longest drives are about five hours. "story": "The Langtang valley is a short drive north of Kathmandu and feels a long way from it. Tamang villages, yak pastures and glaciers lead up to the monastery at Kyanjin Gompa.\n\nThe 2015 earthquake destroyed Langtang village. It has been rebuilt by the families who live there, and part of what you spend here goes to them. From Kyanjin you can climb Tserko Ri for a view across to Tibet.\n\nThe trek needs no mountain flight. A private jeep takes you to Syabrubesi, and from there the trail climbs up the forested gorge of the Langtang Khola and out into the open upper valley. We walk it with short days at Ghodatabela and Langtang village, so you reach Kyanjin at 3,870 metres well acclimatised, with a full day there to climb or rest.\n\nLangtang suits travellers who want real mountain scenery within a week or so, without very high altitude or long, hard days. It is also a good choice if you would rather avoid the weather risk of Lukla flights. The lodges on this trail are simple teahouses throughout, clean and friendly, mostly with shared bathrooms. Your nights in Kathmandu, at each end, are at a heritage hotel."

"story": "Manaslu is the eighth-highest mountain in the world, and the circuit around it is a restricted area that only licensed groups may enter. That keeps the trail quiet and the villages much as they were.\n\nThe walk climbs the Budhi Gandaki gorge into the Nubri valley, where people are of Tibetan descent and the monasteries are old. We take two acclimatisation days before crossing the Larke La at 5,106 metres.\n\nThe route starts low, at under 1,000 metres, and climbs slowly for three days through a deep, green gorge before the valley opens into fields, mani walls and stone villages below Manaslu. Acclimatisation days at Samagaon and Samdo come before the short day to Dharamsala and the long crossing of the pass. On the far side you descend through forest to the Marsyangdi, and a private jeep takes you to Pokhara for a day of rest.\n\nThis is one of our most demanding journeys, best for travellers who have trekked at altitude before and enjoy long days. It also sees far fewer people than Everest or Annapurna. Comfort is simple: every night between Kathmandu and Pokhara is in a family teahouse, often with shared bathrooms, and the lodge at Dharamsala is very basic. Your guides carry oxygen and check your levels every morning and evening."

"story": "Mardi Himal is a long ridge that climbs from the forest above Pokhara to the foot of Machapuchare. Lodges on the trail are small and simple, and the views are among the best in the Annapurnas.\n\nIt suits walkers who want a quieter trail than Poon Hill or Base Camp and are happy to trade comfort for solitude. Above Australian Camp there are few villages, and the lodges are basic teahouses with shared bathrooms. We book the best rooms available, and you return to a comfortable hotel in Pokhara at the end.\n\nThe route is simple: up through oak and rhododendron forest to Low Camp, out above the trees onto the open ridge, and on to High Camp at 3,580 metres, with Machapuchare growing closer every day. The walking is steady rather than long, with several short days.\n\nWe walk it slowly, with a short day at Badal Danda so the climb to High Camp comes easily. On the last morning you can go on to the upper viewpoint at 4,200 metres, if conditions allow and you feel strong. Your guide checks your oxygen and pulse each morning and evening on the ridge, and the descent to Siding and Pokhara comes straight afterwards."

"story": "Pikey Peak is a sacred hill in the Sherpa country south of the Khumbu, and a fine place to watch sunrise on Everest. Few trekkers come this way.\n\nThere are no mountain flights. You drive from Kathmandu into the Solu hills and walk from Phaplu, through forest and Sherpa farmland, to the village of Junbesi and on up to the peak. It is a short trek at moderate altitude, which makes it a good choice for a first Himalayan walk, for a winter trip, or for anyone who wants to see Everest without the crowds of the Khumbu.\n\nThe walk runs through rhododendron forest and through Junbesi, home to the monastery of Thubten Chholing. You spend two nights there before going higher, then sleep one night below the peak and climb it at dawn, with a long line of the Himalaya in front of you.\n\nThe comfort here is different from the Khumbu. In Phaplu you stay in a heritage house with private rooms; in Junbesi and below the peak, in the best of the simple teahouses. The highest night is at 3,640 metres, and the day you climb the peak is long, so come with good walking legs."

"story": "A gentle walk through the Gurung and Magar villages below Annapurna South and Machapuchare. The trails are stone stairs between terraced fields, and each night is in a warm mountain lodge or the best house in the village.\n\nIt suits a first trek in Nepal, couples who would rather walk four or five hours a day than push for altitude, and anyone who wants the Himalaya with village life close at hand. The highest point is Poon Hill, at 3,210 metres, so altitude is rarely a concern.\n\nThe route makes a loop from Pokhara. You walk up through Dhampus and Landruk, cross the Modi Khola to Ghandruk, where you spend an evening with a family, and then climb through the rhododendron forest to Tadapani and Ghorepani. The first three nights are in mountain lodges with en-suite rooms. At Tadapani and Ghorepani the lodges are simpler, and we book the best private rooms available.\n\nFrom Ghorepani you climb Poon Hill at dawn for sunrise over Dhaulagiri and the Annapurnas, then walk down to the road and drive back to the lake. A free day in Pokhara, and an afternoon in Patan, close the journey."

"story": "Tsum is a hidden valley in the old Buddhist sense: a sacred place set aside for retreat. It sits below the Tibetan border, inside a restricted area, and stayed closed to visitors until 2008.\n\nMani walls line the trail, and the valley has kept its old ways. You visit the caves where Milarepa is said to have meditated, spend a night at Mu Gompa at the head of the valley, and walk back through the nunnery at Rachen Gompa.\n\nThe route shares its first days with the Manaslu Circuit, up the Budhi Gandaki gorge, then turns east into Tsum. You climb through lower Tsum to the wide upper valley, with Ganesh Himal behind you, and reach Mu Gompa at 3,700 metres before returning by the same valley. There is no high pass, and the sleeping altitude rises gradually.\n\nTsum suits travellers who are more interested in people and monasteries than in summits, and who are happy with simple comfort. Every night on the trail is in a village teahouse or at the monastery, with shared bathrooms in most places. Few trekkers come this way, and the welcome in the villages is warm. You finish with a rest day in Kathmandu and an evening at Boudhanath."

"story": "Upper Mustang kept its own king until 2008 and was closed to outsiders until 1992. Its walled capital, Lo Manthang, still keeps fifteenth-century monasteries painted inside with some of the finest murals in the Himalaya.\n\nYou begin and end at Shinta Mani Mustang, a lodge in Jomsom with views of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri. In between you travel on foot and by private 4x4 through a high desert of red cliffs, cave monasteries and villages built from mud and stone. The 4x4 is there for the long, dusty stretches, so your days are spent walking the best parts and exploring rather than covering ground.\n\nThe route goes north through Kagbeni, Chele, Ghami and Tsarang to Lo Manthang, where you spend two nights, and returns by a different line past Ghar Gompa and the red cliffs of Drakmar. Sleeping altitudes rise slowly, with two nights in Jomsom first, and never go above 3,840 metres.\n\nThis journey suits travellers who love history and landscape more than high peaks, and who want the comfort of a fine hotel at each end. On the trail the lodges are simple family teahouses, warm and welcoming, with shared bathrooms in most villages. Because Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, it is also one of the few journeys that works well in the summer monsoon."
